In summer 2022, all Korean local and regional governments (220) declared a Climate Emergency within a unique, unified movement – similar to declaring a pandemic. In doing so, the sub-national governments of the Republic of Korea wanted to set the signal for urgent climate action in the country. This dialogue between mayors and high-level officials proposes to take a look into the purpose, process and impact of declaring Climate Emergency at the local and regional level, in a global setting.

  • Moderator: Ms Yeonhee Park, Director of the ICLEI Korea Office
  • Woo-ryang Park, Governor of Shinan-gun, Chair of Korea Local Governments Alliance for Sustainable Development
  • Yeom Tae-young, Vice Governor for Economy, Gyeonggi Provincial Government
  • Eun-ah Ko, Head of Daejeon Environmental Education Center
  • Sami Kanaan, Mayor of Geneva
  • Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, Mayor of Male
